Planning Ahead

Why Plan Ahead?

Peace of mind for you and your family
Making these decisions now means your family won't have to guess what you wanted or make difficult choices while grieving. You'll know everything is arranged, and they'll be grateful you took care of it.
Time to make the right choice
Without the pressure of immediate need, you can explore different options, and make decisions that truly feel right for you - from your final resting place to the type of service you'd like.
Financial certainty
When you pre-plan and pre-pay, you lock in today's prices and can arrange plans that work for your budget. This protects your family from future cost increases and unexpected expenses.
Your wishes, your way
Every detail can reflect your preferences and values - whether that's a traditional service, something more personal and contemporary, burial or cremation, or the location and style of your memorial.

Common Questions About Pre-Planning

When should I start planning?
There's no perfect time, but many people find it easier to make clear-headed decisions when they're well. Planning ahead is simply practical preparation, like writing a will or arranging insurance.
What decisions will I need to make?
You'll make choices about both your service and your final resting place. This includes deciding between burial or cremation, the type of service you'd prefer (traditional, contemporary, or something uniquely personal), and your final resting place - whether that's a burial plot, family estate, or a plot suitable for ashes. You'll also consider memorialisation options like headstones or plaques. Our team will guide you through each decision at your own pace, and you can plan as much or as little as you'd like.
Can I choose the exact location of my final resting place?
Yes. When you plan ahead with Auckland Memorial Park & Cemetery, you have the opportunity to select your preferred location. Many other cemeteries may have specific criteria or restrictions for pre-purchasing plots.
What about the service itself?
You can plan as much or as little of your service as you'd like. Some people prefer to outline their preferences for music, readings, or the tone of the service. Others focus primarily on securing their final resting place. It's entirely up to you, and your choices can always be discussed with your family.
What if my circumstances change?
We understand that life brings changes. Pre-planned arrangements can be updated, and in some cases, transferred. We'll explain all the details so you feel confident in your decisions.
How does payment work?
We offer flexible payment options, including paying in full or setting up a manageable payment plan. We'll work with you to find an approach that suits your financial situation.
What will my family need to do?
Very little. When you've pre-planned and pre-arranged your funeral, your family or your nominated Funeral Director, can simply contact us, and we'll take care of everything according to your wishes. All the difficult decisions will already be made, meaning your family can focus on being together and remembering you.

Choosing the Right Funeral Director and Cemetery

This is an important decision, and it's worth taking time to find the right fit. Look for a funeral director and cemetery team who listen to you, answer your questions clearly, and make you feel comfortable - not rushed. Consider the cemetery grounds themselves: do they feel peaceful and well-maintained? Are they conveniently located for family visits? Ask about the range of options available, from traditional to contemporary, and whether they can accommodate cultural or religious preferences. It's also helpful to understand what's included in costs and whether payment plans are available. Trust your instincts - you should feel supported and confident in the care you and your family will receive.
